MED103 Beginning Meditation: Calm and Clear

A regular meditation practice allows us to become calm and to stay clear. We discover in meditation a foundation for self-development. As we continue to practice, almost imperceptibly the quality of everyday life begins to change. We find that we act with more creativity and care, truly engaged in our own lives and more responsive to others.

Meditation can calm the mind, leading to greater mental clarity, and to insight. Students learn how to foster both through traditional techniques including awareness of the movements of mind, of breath and body, chanting and visualization.

For beginners and those wishing to review basic techniques.

MED212 Intermediate Meditation: Taking the Teachings to Heart

“We might not realize how easily we substitute words for experience, or stop to think about how this affects our ability to touch the living quality of experience itself,” writes Tarthang Tulku in Joy of Being.

Without a living connection to the heart, words remain concepts without much effect and there is little understanding. Meditation can open a pathway to the heart so that the inner meaning of the teachings can come alive. In this class, we engage in practices that open the heart, expand feeling and awareness, and reveal more natural ways of being. Readings from Openness Mind, Joy of Being, and Bringing the Teachings Alive.

Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable sitting in meditation and be interested in exploring their experience.

No class on July 10 or 24.
