At every stage of our development, it is important to cultivate a balanced approach to practice. We need to encourage ourselves, but at the same time be alert that our motivation for practice may change. How can we make meditation an integral part of our lives? How can we sustain meditative awareness in all activity? Using Tarthang Tulku's Hidden Mind of Freedom, we will explore these and other questions in developing a friendship with meditation.

MED222 Intermediate Meditation: A Process of Self-Discovery
The reasons for following the path of meditation are different for everyone.  How has your motivation changed as you continue to practice, from what it was when you first began, starting with an idea? We meet our own challenges of mind in meditation, but it is also mind's capacity to expand, discovering ways to move beyond the challenges we face, be it resistance or other negative habit patterns. We gain clarity and certainty only through our own experience, by a process of self-discovery. Meditation provides the key for unlocking the secrets of mind.  They become increasingly clear as we persevere with deepening relaxation and the refreshing coolness of patience.

Prerequisite: One year of meditation experience or consent of Instructor. No class on the day before Thanksgiving.

MED309 Advanced Meditation: Practices for the Time of Death
Tibetan Buddhists, especially in the Nyingma tradition, have developed many powerful practices for use at the time of death. All of them are alike in recognizing the immense power of our mind—thoughts, attitudes, and openness—to shape experience.

This course introduces Tibetan Buddhist practices for the time of death, including specific mantras and prayers that we will practice together. We will draw from sutras and tantras on this topic, especially teachings from Padmasambhava, the founder of the Nyingma tradition.

Prerequisite: Three years of meditation experience, or consent of the instructor.
